Speech on Emotional Intelligence

EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE

I would like to begin my speech on Emotional Intelligence – the differentiation between Manager and Leader, with a quote.

“It is your attitude at the beginning of a task that determines success or failure.”

Dear friends, Is there a difference between managers and leaders? To me, the answer is—absolutely. After exploring few articles about the differences between managers and leaders, I concluded that the present environment leans towards more managerial than leadership qualities. There is always the opportunity to become a manager, but becoming a leader takes a certain kind of higher learning and understanding in order to be practiced effectively. A manager finds immediate solutions, a leader questions the solutions. The term manager exemplifies the more structured, controlled, analytical, orderly, and rule-oriented person. The leader exemplifies a more experimental, visionary, unstructured, flexible and risk taking person. Managers and leaders think differently internally, therefore the outcome is different externally. I would like to put across few examples to crystallize the differences between managers and leaders.
The Manager…
The Leader…
Maintains
Develops
Accepts reality
Investigates it
Has a short-range view
Has a long-range perspective
Has his/her eye on the bottom line
Has his/her eye on the horizon
Imitates
Originates
Accepts the status quo
Challenges the status quo
is Classic good soldier
is His/her own person
is analytical / structured / orderly
is experimental / visionary / creative
Use the power of logical mind
Use the power of intuition
Consider dangers
Sense opportunity
Isolate
Correlate
Think rivals/Competition
Think Partners/Cooperation
Correct Strategic Weaknesses
Build on Strategic Strengths
Administer Programs
Develop People
Formulate Policy
Set Examples
Instruct
Inspire
Control
Empower
Employ Consistency
Employ Creativity
Duplicate
Originate
See Complexity
See Simplicity
React
Proact
Plan
Experiment
Ask How
Wonder Why
Think Logically
Think Laterally
is Skeptical
is Optimistic
Take Charge
Encourage Delegation
Perform Duties
Pursue Dreams
is Dependent
is Independent
Inhabit the Present
Reside in the future
Want Good
Demand Better
Follow versions
Pursue visions
Is Static
Is Evolving
Easily fire employees
Would rather self-improve employees
Scrutinize performance
Search for potential
Fixed
Mutable

……. and a lot more differentiations can be established.

Warren Bennis, — a popular writer of leadership resources — quotes that “There is a profound difference between management and leadership, and both are important. To manage means, to bring about, to accomplish, to have charge of or responsibility for, and to conduct. Leading is influencing, guiding in a direction, course, action, opinion. The distinction is crucial…  Managers are people who do things right and the leaders are people who do the right thing.” In my opinion, these examples show the slight differentiation between the manager and the leader. However, this slight difference is what makes a person distinguishable between their power to perform and their power to transform.
Thank you.

Poem-Tree

A TREE

A tree is not just a tree

With colourful flowers

And leaves green.

But a box of treasure

Which gives us so many gifts.

Its trunk is brown.

Which seems to be wearing

A green-coloured crown.

It is home for many birds

And food for several animals

It is shade for many travellers

And medicine for many patients.

It makes the air clean

And gives out oxygen

So that we can breathe it in.

It provides us with wood

With gum, with food

It also gives us rubber and pepper

And the list goes on, beyond the paper.

Despite so many helps

We humans are being selfish

We kill them which is bad.

We must not repeat this

And stop cutting trees.

Because we are greedy

And have endless desires and needs.

Poem-Summer Season

SUMMER SEASON

Summer season is coming,

Summer season is coming,

With lots of good happenings.

When I see cold drinks,

My mouth starts watering.

We eat and drink cold things,

Like ice-creams and other drinks.

Mostly we wear dresses

The sleeves of which are half of cut

Do you know why?

They don’t make us sweat.

Ok, now I am signing off

For, I am tired of writing

And the sun has stopped shining

Because it is evening.

Poem-Failure

FAILURE

Failure is an ignominious word

It is when you don’t prove your worth

Your kinsmen become your critics

Who remember your failure-related antics

In this hour of distress no one come close

Look for sympathy, out it goes.

The pain that lingers

In the heart full of dreams

Is expected to taper

A good outcome of labour.

Still don’t underestimate yourself, man

Think about your capability

Do what you can,

To succeed in this cut-throat

World of competition.

Let them think what they want

You should not scream and shout

For you have to remain

Calm and composed

Because real winners come

From behind closed doors!

Poem-Nature

NATURE’S GREEN

Green! Green! Green!

What a wonderful scene!

Do not cut that tree

Hope you will agree.

Trees never demand fees,

For their delicious feasts.

Grow many a plant

They really enchant

Have a kitchen garden

Become a ‘green’ captain

Say no to beach litter

As animals feel bitter.

Make our earth clean

Let that be our dream!

Poem-Hope

HOPE

A broken winged bird unable to fly.

Gorvelling in the dust

Trying to reach high.

But failing despite so many tries.

Fluttering, uttering silent cries

Is nobody there for my rescue?

To paint my life with glorious hues

Oh, when will I taste sweet freedom again,

Will I always be bonded in deep pain?

Just how much will you torment me?

Shall I ever be woebegone, never free!

Many a tear have I shed all this long

So often have I sung melancholy songs.

I am weary of this world, this life

Left is nothing but sorrow and strife

Fears and frustations beset my way

No good, kind words does anyone say,

I do not expect

An act of humanity

From any in this world of

Treason and felony,

Though dejected, I am not yet broken,

Deep down, a quiet feeling is lurking,

That some day all is going to be fine,

There will again be a wonderful time.

My faith in God is unfathomable.

And like the heroine of

Some bedtime fable,

I will be the princess one day.

And with the elves

On a flying horse,

To the Heaven I will ride away.

Poem-Ganga

GANGA

She runs across the plains and glaciers

Coming from the deep valleys

And exotic hils.

With unbounded humanity within,

She is the talk of every myth,

And the soul of Indian relics.

A sign of purity in every drop,

Rising and the setting of the sun

She reflects,

Altogether showing the sky down in it,

And the stars twinking in calm water,

And the strength of Indianness.

She never stops for anyone,

But everyone stops to see her,

With unquestioning faith inside,

She plans her odyssey within,

She shines Indian courtesy bright.

Her calmness can stop the time,

Her integrity can bring words

To a mime

Let her trength shine in the sky,

With praises of people

Singing high.

She’s the daughter of the Himalayas,

A lifetime companion

Of the northern plains,

She can either be a fire

Or a friend beside,

Within her lies the wealth of India,

And cries reaching her

Destination (Bay of Bengal),

Like every Indian bride.

Poem-Pollution

POLLUTION MENACE

Everywhere there is pollution,

Isn’t there any solution?

Vehicles leave a lot of dust and smoke

Causing the earth to choke.

Pollution itself in a way

Is increasing day by day.

We humans are responsible

For this pollution.

Hence we should try to find

An ultimate solution.

Poem-Our Future is in our Hand

OUR FUTURE IS IN OUR HANDS

We are the future of tomorrow,

We pledge to help each one

Who is in difficulty or sorrow.

Our duty is to help our nation to improve,

By decreasing pollution

And increasing tree groves.

We must follow the right footsteps,

The ones which lead us

To higher pedestals.

We are the ones on whom

The nation depends.

All of us should live with harmony

And be friends.

Let’s end every discrimination,

As we want to enlighten and improve our nation.

Poem-Nature

NATURE
Beautiful birds, blue sky
Give us the message to fly high
The trees that grow
The croaking of the crow
All are a part of nature
And nature includes all creatures
Humans are special
And this is indeed beneficial
For they can change the world
As they wish
From big trees to tiny fish
If we plant a tree
It gives us oxygen free
Animals are a must
As they help clean the environment
By eating all raw and dust
Nature should be maintained
For its beauty
And each one should realize this duty
Nothing on earth would be
Bad and rash.

Poem-Books

BOOKS

Books gaze, hopefully they glance

From the glass

Of closed shelves

But they are no more for us

As they were before

The knowledge-granting elves!

Evenings which were spent

Sitting with them bent

Now with a screen,

Red, blue or green,

They disappear, die

As time dispassionately flies.

Months now pass away,

Where they are,

They stay

And we pass our night and day

Sitting in front of computers

Feeling gay.

Self talking and sleep walking only

Nowadays amaze,

The untouchables and lonely

Who still hopefully,

Glance and gaze.

But, come on now,

Break the shelves,

Let us together

Free the elves.

No more now,

Think to overwhelm.

Reunite, reopen, reread them.

See their sea, take a swim

Illuminate their torch

For now it is dim.
